Cummins ISBe Diesel Engine

Cummins have released details of new ISBe engine designed to meet the needs of today’s modern and more complex military vehicles. The new 6.7 litre diesel unit boasts 360 horse power (HP), equivalent to 268 kW, and was announced at the DSEI trade show in London. Based on the latest 6.7 ISBe motor, engineers spent a total of two years re-engineering the motor to delivery upgrades equating to 60hp (or 44kW) over the standard engine.

Dave Hurley, Defence Marketing Manager for Cummins says: “The ISBe 6.7 360 hp enables advanced logistics vehicles that are frequently more and more tech-heavy to have the power to perform in theatre, and be able to climb steep inclines at high altitudes whilst maintaining power. The size of the engine has not increased, and neither has the weight, allowing for an excellent improvement in power-to-weight ratio compared to other engines in its class”. Offering a peak torque of 811 lb-ft (1100 NM) the engine is an ideal solution for weighty personnel carrier, fast-response and amphibious vehicles.

The engine was initially developed alongside BAE Land Systems South Africa for the RG31 MKVI heavily armoured vehicle, utilising a V-shaped hull for ultimate protection. The Cummins 6.7 powers the RG31 up to 60mph on open roads and 25mph off road and the versatility of fast response power. The engine torque offers the ability to climb inclines of 60% slopes and maintain speed in rough ground. The BAE order of 70 engines have departed the Cummins plant, in the UK, destined for upfit to the aforementioned vehicles.

The B-Series engine is renowned for its reliability, with the experience of over 30,000 B-Series engines in circulation among military fields globally. The latest 360 HP offering is derived from this proven test bed, seeing action in a variety of vehicles each day. By maintaining the same size and characteristics of the B-Series, the latest offering from Cummins is easy to maintain and does not need any extra training or tools for those used to working on previous Cummins engines. Furthermore, by using the same envelope as the B-Series, engines equipped with the B-Series engine, can be directly swapped for the latest unit.
