Strong alliance! CMI and NAV jointly develop hydrogen fuel cell heavy trucks

Cummins and Navistar International will jointly develop a hydrogen fuel cell 8-level heavy truck. The project aims to develop integrated fuel cell electric powertrains for heavy-duty trucks to ensure that their operating performance and total cost of ownership are optimized, and they will be widely adopted by the truck market as soon as possible.

The project will develop a hydrogen fuel power solution that can be mass-produced on a large scale, supporting a cruising range of 300 miles and above, and improving its fuel economy compared with the current heavy trucks. The prototype fuel cell truck developed will undergo a one-year road test.

The truck powertrain will be integrated into the Navistar International RH series and will use Cummins’ high-reliability fuel cell HyPM HD90 module. The use of two independent stacks in series can ensure that each stack can operate efficiently at full load, which is more efficient than a single large fuel cell operating under partial load.

The prototype fuel cell 8-level truck will undergo a one-year road test. The truck will join Werner Cargo and merge into its fleet of more than 7,700 trailers for field operations in the Fontana, California area.
